2023 Indiana Tree Farmer of the Year

By Ken Day

Jeffrey and Jeanna Stout of Hagerstown, Indiana are the 2023 Indiana Tree Farmers of the Year.  Their tree farm is 87 acres and located in Wayne County.  The Stout’s were selected because of outstanding stewardship and willingness to share experiences with others.  The award was presented at the Tree Farm Breakfast at the Indiana Hardwood Lumberman’s Association convention in Indianapolis.

Their forest management has been guided by professional foresters.  The most recent management plan was updated in 2018.  In addition to being in the Tree Farm system, they also have 67 acres in the Classified Forest program and 15 acres in the Classified Wildlife Habitat program.

The tree farm consists of 82 acres of natural hardwoods, 3 acres of planted hardwoods, and 1 acre of conifers.  They have implemented a wide variety of wildlife habitat improvements including pond construction, duck boxes, food plots, and clover and grass plantings.  Timber harvests have occurred in 2022, 2015, 2008, and 1998.  Timber stand improvement was conducted in 2023, 2001, and the early 1990s.

The Stout’s have hosted forestry field days and pond clinic for Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation District.  They have been instrumental in starting the Indiana Chapter of Quality Deer Management Association in 2001.  In 2008 they were recognized as the District 15 Classified Forest and Wildlands Owner of the Year.  Tree Farmer of the Year is sponsored by Indiana Tree Farm.
